The Hague, September 29, 2017 – Yesterday, Erik Gerritsen, Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, received the first legal certificate for a blockchain solution in the healthcare sector. The certificate was issued by law firm Pels Rijcken, which had legally tested this blockchain, at the Blockchain Future of Trust Summit 2017 in the Ridderzaal in The Hague. The certified blockchain application Mijn Zorg Log was developed by Dutch blockchain specialist Ledger Leopard for Zorginstituut Nederland. The first operational and legally certified blockchain application has arrived.
Mijn Zorg Log is a pioneering
initiative in terms of privacy
“Blockchain is said to be the biggest technological innovation since the advent of the internet. At the Zorginstituut, we were eager to know: is this really true? What could new technologies such as blockchain mean for healthcare? And what consequences would it have for previous agreements and principles for data exchange in healthcare? By building Mijn Zorg Log – a blockchain solution based on a practical test case for Appie, a fictitious citizen requiring healthcare – we discovered that blockchain has the potential to turn the world upside down. It makes designing administrative processes more efficient and puts users in full control over their own healthcare information. ‘Blockchain allows us to give users and citizens even more control’, says Peter Snaterse of Zorginstuut Nederland.
Mijn Zorg Log is a pioneering initiative in terms of privacy, as introducing potentially harmful information about care-dependent individuals into a blockchain requires a very careful process. Together with law firm Pels Rijcken, a leading player regarding innovation in the Netherlands, we mapped dozens of legal requirements and translated them directly into the build. Due to the cross-pollination between law and technology and by always listening to each other, we managed to retain the principal characteristics of the blockchain. Mijn Zorg Log complies with all relevant laws and regulations and, as far as we know, it is the first blockchain to have been fully legally tested.
Jeroen van Megchelen, CEO of Ledger Leopard: ‘We’re incredibly happy with the legal certificate awarded to Mijn Zorg Log. Over the last two years, we put all our efforts into developing blockchain solutions that actually work as a start-up. In doing so, we also spent a lot of time on having our approach certified and recognized. The certificate for the solution we developed for the Zorginstuut is an important milestone.’
‘Blockchain establishes the foundation for trust’ Kees van Iwaarden “How beautiful would it be if all the information about a building was actually stored at the building in such a way that it could easily and safely be shared with other stakeholders” says Kees van Iwaarden about his company. ’Blockchain prevents piles of unnecessary paper’ Henk Duinkerken Exchanging medical and personal information is a sensitive matter. Patients must be able to assume that their data is exchanged safely and will not be (unintentionally) altered. This was an important reason for Henk Duinkerken, Director of the Microbiome Center NL, to opt for the blockchain solution …Read the full story
